November 18, 2008

Boston, Mass. (November 18)-The Saint Anselm women's ice hockey team dropped their first game of the year to ECAC East opponent UMass Boston 7-3 on Tuesday night at the Clark Athletic Center.

The Hawks struck first when senior forward Bianca DeSantis (Georgetown, Mass.) took a feed from freshman forward Aly Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and sophomore forward Chelsea Fillingim (Fairbanks, Alaska) and scored her third goal of the season coming on a five on three power play almost half way through the first period.

After that the Beacon scored six unanswered goals, including a hat trick from forward Maria Nasta (Andover, Mass.) and goals from Maria Guanci (Everett, Mass.), Kelly Gillis (Northford, Conn.), Emily Brienzo (Greenfield,Wisc.).

The Hawks responded with the first two goals of the third period. Freshman forward Cierra Romaldo (Chuluota, Florida) and freshman defenseman Jamie Comrie (Asburn, Virg.) fed senior forward Kelsey Johnson (Byfield, Mass.) for her third goal of the year. Then DeSantis set up freshman forward Michelle Lacombe (Delafield, Wisc.) for her first collegiate goal just 64 seconds later to cut the deficit to 6-3 for the Hawks.

UMass Boston capped the scoring with another power play score when Nasta blasted a shot from the middle of the circles and junior forward Katelyn Lajoie (Marlboro, Mass.) redirected it into the net for her first goal of the season for the 7-3 final.

The Beacons were 5-10 on the power play to set a school-record for power play scores, while limiting Saint Anselm to just one goal in nine chances on its power play.

Freshman goalie Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) stopped 13 of 18 shots in 30:38 of action for the Hawks, before yielding to sophomore Carley Berry (Danvers, Mass.), who played the final 29:22 and turned away 14 of 16 shots that she faced. UMass Boston freshman goaltender Jami Cudmore (Balgonie, SK) earned her first collegiate victory with 30 saves.

The Loss drops the Hawks to 4-1-0 overall and in league play, while the victory improves the Beacons to 3-1-1 overall and in ECAC East action.

The Hawks return to action Friday, November 21st, as they will host Plymouth State at 4 p.m. at Sullivan Arena.
