Skiing Competes at Plymouth State Carnival

Waterville Valley, N.H. (January 26) -- The Saint Anselm men's and women's ski teams competed at the Plymouth State Carnival over the weekend, held at Waterville Valley Ski Area. The men's team placed sixth in both the slalom and giant slalom, while the women were sixth in the slalom and seventh in the giant slalom.

In the men's slalom competition, Mike Maroni (Plymouth, N.H.) led the Hawks with a 34th-place finish in a combined time of 1:34.81. Senior captain Mike Wilbur (Manchester, N.H.) was next for the Hawks in 44th place, followed by Sam Piper (Dalton, Mass.) in 45th and Matt Pelucacci (Gouldsboro, Pa.) in 47th. Sam Bensley (Newburyport, Mass.) rounded out the top five for the Hawks in 48th place in a combined time of 1:44.90.

In the giant slalom in frigid conditions on Sunday, the Hawks were led by a 33rd-place showing by Pelucacci in a combined time of 2:11.24. Maroni followed close behind  in 36th, along with Piper in 39th. Wilbur and Bensley finished 45th and 46th, respectively.

On the women's side in the slalom, co-captain Maura Huff (Russell, Mass.) placed eighth in a combined time of 1:33.80. Freshman Lauren Burgess (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) continued her strong rookie season with a 25th-place showing in a combined time of 1:39.24. Co-captain Erin Forbes (Hanover, Maine) placed 31st, followed by Jacqui Cloud (Winsted, Conn.) in 32nd place. Cara Suglia (Andover, Mass.) rounded out the top five skiers for the Hawks in 45th place.

In the giant slalom on Sunday, Burgess led the way in 27th place in a combined time of 2:11.04. Forbes finished in 35th, followed by Cloud in 43rd and Huff in 49th place.

The Hawks are back in action on Saturday at the MIT Carnival at Loon, followed by the UMass Carnival on Sunday at Pat's Peak.
