Hawks Upend UMass-Lowell 3-2

Manchester, N.H. (April 30)-The Saint Anselm College baseball team defeated the River Hawks of UMass-Lowell 3-2 on Thursday afternoon in their final home game of the 2009 season at Sullivan Park. The win improves the Hawks to 16-29 overall and 11-17 in conference play, while the loss drops the River Hawks to 24-16 overall and 15-12 in league play.
UMass-Lowell hit the scoreboard in the top of the first on an RBI double from Peter Onorato (Clarence Center, N.Y.) scoring Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.). The Hawks got their last out of the inning when centerfielder TJ Bowler (Pittsfield, Mass.) threw out Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, Mass.) at the plate. Saint Anselm scored in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly from Ben Waldrip (Medford, Mass.) scoring senior shortstop Ben Gunn (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) to make it 1-1.
In the top of the third, the River Hawks took the lead back when Notargiacomo ripped an RBI single scoring Jacobs for the 2-1 advantage.
UML continued to pressure the Hawks, as Saint Anselm starter Nick Barese (Braintree, Mass.) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fourth, by striking out Jacobs looking to end the inning.
Saint Anselm took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth, with the bases loaded and only one out. River Hawks reliever Ryan Stoller (Milton, Mass.), walked Melvin Perdue (Jonesboro, Ga.) to even the game at 2-2. Two batters later, Jimmy Garrigan (Plymouth, Mass.) drew another bases loaded walk to give the Hawks a 3-2 NE-10 win.
Barese went seven innings, allowing 2 runs and striking out 6 in the no-decision. Saint Anselm reliever David Giarrusso (Cranston, R.I.) pitched two-thirds of the ninth to pick up his first save of 2009, while John Healey (Cranston, R.I.) got the win throwing 1.1 scoreless innings. River Hawks starter Dallas Nunes (Easton, Mass.) went seven-plus innings allowing one run but did not factor in the decision.
The Hawks will conclude their season on Sunday, May 3rd, as they will travel to Stonehill College for an NE-10 twin bill starting at noon.
